In the current
business environment, the old adage "time is money" applies
now more than ever. So what happens when everyday operations
are disrupted? According to the U.S. Labor Department, more
than 40 percent of all companies that experience a disaster
never reopen - and more than 25 percent of those that do
reopen after a disaster occurs will close down for good
within two years. But even if your company doesn't go
through a major disaster, chances are high that it will
experience the negative consequences of unplanned outages
that make business as usual impossible.

5 Tips
for Top-notch Password Security

Whether it's a few PCs or hundreds on
your network, there's one thing that can
separate your system from being
compromised: a great password. Why?
Hackers want access to anything and
everything. If they can guess your user
name and password, you might as well
have given them your wallet and the keys
to your building.
Before we talk about what makes a good
password, let's begin with the
first of five things to know and
practice in using passwords. |

Software and
the Taxman

What do you consider when you're buying
new business software? How well the
product addresses the needs of your
organization? Naturally. The cost per
seat? Sure. The ease of administration
and maintenance? Of course. The tax
implications of the purchase?
If you're not thinking about taxes, you
should be. The green-eyeshade gang in
your finance department will thank you
for it, and heaven knows we could all
use a friend or two in finance. So,
sharpen your pencil and grab your
abacus, and let's
take a look at some of the tax
implications of software licensing. |

What IT Decision Makers are Saying
About Cloud Computing and
Why It Should
Matter to You

As a business
decision maker (BDM), you have a lot of tough choices to
make, whether they are based on intuition or extensive
research. Knowing what your peers think about business
trends and what your IT staff says about new technology
solutions can help you make sound decisions.
Along these lines,
Microsoft recently commissioned a survey on cloud computing
that lends some insight into how IT decision makers (ITDMs)
can examine the benefits of cloud computing and how it might
help their businesses. Conducted by 7th Sense Research, the
survey found that ITDMs across the U.S. strongly agree that
cloud solutions present a strategic opportunity for
businesses and concur that the cloud is "an engine of
growth."

No
animal, once frozen solid (i.e., water
solidifies and turns to ice) survives when
thawed, because the ice crystals formed
inside cells would break open the cell
membranes. However there are certain frogs
that can survive the experience of being
frozen. These frogs make special proteins
which prevent the formation of ice (or at
least keep the crystals from becoming very
large), so that they actually never freeze
even though their body temperature is below
zero Celsius. The water in them remains
liquid: a phenomenon known as 'supercooling.'
If you disturb one of these frogs (just
touching them even), the water in them
quickly freezes solid and they die. |

Josh Lillard, Logistics Manager
Emerge IT Solutions, LLC |
We
asked JOSH LILLARD seven questions in order for you to get
to know him better!
Q: Tell us a little bit about your family?
A: I have an awesome blended family with my fiancé Tosha
Jackson & her two children Amber(11), Andrew(8) and my three
children Hailey (10), Hayden (6) and Hilary (5). We have
plans to get married in October of this year. We keep very
busy with all the kids’ sports and school activities.
Q: Tell us a
little bit about your career?
A: I started my professional career with the Discovery
Channel after I
graduated high school. I worked at their distribution center
for 10 years and held various titles ranging from truck
loader to Manager of Direct Marketing distribution. During
this time, I attended Thomas Moore college & finally ended
up here at Emerge on January 18, 2008. I’m not one for
jumping around job to job, so I’m planning on staying here
until I retire.
Q: Who is your favorite super hero?
A: Super Dave Osborne
Q: During the year, who is your favorite charity group
and why?
A: Northern Kentucky Fly Fishers (NKFF). I’ve been a member
since I was twelve years old & it’s a large part of my life.
I’m currently the president of the club and we help out with
several kids fishing events & other educational activities
throughout the year. Check out our website for more info:
http://www.nkyflyfishers.org/
Q:
Do you own any pets?
A: Yes, I own several pets. I have a 12 year old Red & White
female Siberian Husky named Lexie, a 7 year old male cat
named Claire (Hailey named him when she was little and
wanting a sister), a rabbit, a salamander, and several
hermit crabs.
Q: What type of hobbies do you enjoy?
A: I’m an avid fly fishing enthusiast, and try to spend as
much time on the water as I possibly can. I also enjoy
hunting, hiking and playing poker as well.
Q: Finally, what is your favorite thing about working at
Emerge IT Solutions, LLC?
A: Emerge is a great organization, and my favorite thing
about working here is definitely the people. From the owners
to the employees, we are one big family, and we work

Your
company's IP network already enables your employees
to use the internet, e-mail and web resources on the
job. But did you know the very same technology can

growth but want to keep your business expenses from

Should You Own Your
Servers?
Microsoft Small
Business Center
|
|
Technology
buyers today have more choices than ever before.
Hardware and software can be purchased, leased or
rented. Software can be deployed "on-premise" or
accessed "on demand" using cloud computing
offerings, where you pay a monthly fee for software
access. Each of these options has their place.
In
spite of the trend toward cloud computing, many
companies are still buying servers and software to
run their business. In fact, most businesses will
deploy one or more servers in-house for needs which
are not effectively met by in-cloud services.
However, before you go out and buy your own servers,
consider your options. A server purchase requires an
upfront investment, but over the course of several
years, you may meet your business objectives much
more effectively by buying servers and software vs.
using cloud or co-location (data center rented
server space). When you use cloud computing, you're
also usually limited to standard options, but many
providers are now offering flexible services.
IS
YOUR BEST OPTION TO OWN SERVERS? After you look
at the functionality you require, be sure to take
into consideration these hidden expenses of owning
servers in-house so that you can create an
apples-to-apples comparison for your technology
decisions.
SERVER MAINTENANCE. No one has yet invented a
"set it and forget it" server. Servers require
regular updates and maintenance to keep up w/changes
in technology and to respond to malware threats. The
operating system and software applications running
on the server also require numerous updates.
SERVER ADMINISTRATION. Who is going to run your
updates and regularly perform maintenance on your
servers? Here you have several options. You can hire
an in-house administrator; you can hire an IT
consultant; you can hire a managed service provider
who will take care of all the routine work for a set
monthly price. The option you choose should be based
on your IT workload.
