Work and Have Fun Too |
|
|
|
|
From the heart of ancient Polynesia
A lesson for busy
Americans - work and
have fun too"
used with permission
from Joel Weldon -
Success Comes In Cans
|
|
A number of years ago, a
United States Peace
Corps volunteer,
teaching English on one
of the tiny, remote
Tongan islands in
Polynesia, learned a
valuable lesson that you
too might benefit from.
His class was giving him
fits—giggling and
playing as usual, and,
as far as he could see,
refusing to do any
serious work. He asked
them to “stop the
nonsense.” Threatening
punishment, he ordered
them to “get down to
business.” He pleaded
with them to “be
responsible for once.”
Finally, in utter
frustration, he turned
his back on the class,
walked to the door and
stared out at the sea.
“You’re so difficult to
under-stand,” he mumbled
to himself.
“No. Easy to
understand,” came the
unexpected response from
one of the students. “We
work and have fun too.”
Do you work and have fun
too? Or are you so busy
working hard that
enjoyment just doesn’t
seem possible?
Well, enjoyment is
possible, and it usually
doesn’t require any
extra time! Rather, it’s
an attitude—a way of
thinking about yourself
and your work.
Today, many of us are so
concerned with
speed—efficiency,
effectiveness,
schedules, deadlines,
and requirements—that
enjoying our work has
become a very low
priority. In contrast,
Tongans believe it is
most important to enjoy
their work and to share
that pleasure with each
other. To them, the
beauty of almost any job
lies not in the tangible
results, but rather in
smiling, laughing, and
singing while they work.
Doing your work well and
on time is very
important, but so is
deriving pleasure from
that work. When you
consciously enjoy what
you are doing, your work
itself improves. Your
associates are affected
by your good
“vibrations” and work
becomes more pleasurable
for them too.
So, from the heart of
ancient Polynesia comes
a valuable lesson for
busy Americans: work and
have fun too!
Here’s what you can do:
Remain aware of what it
is you enjoy about your
work and your
surroundings. Display
your pleasure so others
can benefit from it too.
Make someone laugh
today. Look for the
humor in situations to
break the tension. Don’t
take yourself too
seriously —laugh at
yourself more. If you
don’t think you have
anything to laugh about,
get out your high school
yearbook picture!

EMERGE Golf Outing Teaches Perseverance,
Camaraderie . . . and Storage
Solutions!
|
|
Who knew that a golf outing on a
windy, rainy day could provide
so many parallels to doing
business in a wavering economy?
The day started out terrific.
Presentations were made by our
very own Joe Frank (Virtual
Desktop Infrastructure) and Dell
Equalogix (Storage Solutions).
After a round table discussion
with 26 attendees, it was time
for a round of golf. Eighteen
holes at Traditions Golf Club in
Hebron, KY. Only, this would not
be your ordinary
“hang-out-with-the-guys,
shoot-the-breeze and
enjoy-the-sun” kind of round.
No. This would be a
“grab-your-umbrella and
duck-boots, and
forget-you’re-holding-a-lightning-rod”
kind of game. Seriously though,
as the day finished up, many of
us realized how this day was
actually a good analogy of what
is going on with our businesses.
In tough economic times (rainy,
windy days) it’s important to
work together (cheer on your
teammates, ride the cart
together, hold the umbrella for
someone else) and persevere
(finish 18 holes of golf, even
though 9 would have been safer).
So there it is – golf lessons
for the business world!
Hope to see you next year!

Donated Polyvision Eno Interactive Whiteboard Provides
Major Step Forward for Bluegrass
Technology Center in
Lexington, KY.
|
|
The Bluegrass Technology Center
exists for the purpose of
training educators in the areas
of special needs students
throughout the state of Kentucky
and beyond. Recently, Emerge IT
Solutions donated a Polyvision
Eno Active whiteboard to the
center. Bluegrass Technology’s
Director, Carol Moffet, had this
to say:
“On Friday Oct. 1, 2009 three
days after we had our Eno© Board
install we had a training class.
One of our participants was
wheelchair bound. His
disabilities do not allow him
for a lot of participation. Our
training session was on a device
that is a computer controlled by
eye gaze. We were using the
board mainly as a screen with
some interactive features. At
one time he went to the board
and was able to manipulate the
icons on the screen to do what
he wanted to do. His mother, one
of associates, sat at in the
audience amazed, because nothing
like that had been able to
happen before. Our participant
was able to fully participate
because of the Eno© Board and
this is the first time we have
been truly ACCESSIBLE. Thanks
for helping us to truly reach a
level we have been trying to
reach for our 20 years of
existence!”
Combining the Eno Whiteboard
with an existing special needs
individual took them to a level
that was beyond what was
anticipated.
What could Eno do for you?
